Join us for the first EDTalk of the 2018-19 season, where we will explore media coverage of education and how it shapes public attitudes towards (and engagement with) schools.

Are education reporters making the grade?

Beth Hawkins has been a working journalist for more than 30 years, most recently as an education writer. A founding reporter at Minnesota’s nonprofit public affairs news site MinnPost, Beth wrote Learning Curve, an education news and analysis blog, until late 2015. She is currently national correspondent for The 74 Million, a nonprofit news site focused on education policy, where she is privileged to write about promising policies and practices in schools throughout the country. Beth has two kids, including a proud graduate of Minneapolis Public Schools and an 11th-grader with disabilities who attends Venture Academy.

Is working with the media #worththecost?

Mauri Chantel Melander Friestleben is the principal of Lucy Craft Laney at Cleveland Park Community School in North Minneapolis, and has served the students, staff and families of Lucy Craft Laney for ten years. Mauri was recently featured in several segments of KARE 11’s year-long profile, “Lessons from Lucy Laney,” where she got an insider’s view of working with the media. As an educator she has served in several  capacities and locations, from teacher to assistant to the superintendent, assistant principal and principal. Mauri is a graduate of Washburn High School.

Our emcee for the evening is Adia Morris, a freelance writer, theatre artist and educator based in St. Paul. Adia is Operations Coordinator at Springboard for the Arts, where she teaches business skills workshops for artists and assists with the Incubator Fiscal Sponsorship program. She was the host of TPT's TV Takeover for Seasons 1 and 2, and also appears on TPT's Almanac. She also enjoys working with junior high and high school students as a choreographer and teaching artist.

Parking can be a challenge, so plan accordingly. Some parking is available on the street and in nearby lots. We encourage you to carpool or take public transportation if possible.
